I get asked this a lot by clients…..”Shouldn’t most web sites be designed with an 800×600 screen resolution in mind?”
Well, this may have been true in the 1990s but a lot has changed. I decided to query Google Analytics (which we’ve got running on this blog and the tripledogs.com site) for screen resolution information on our visitors. I ran every visitor we’ve had since August 21, 2006 (the day I set up the Google Analytics service, and here’s what came back:
1024 x 768……………………..39.89% of visitors
1280 x 1024……………………21.10% of visitors
1280 x 800……………………..9.66% of visitors
800 x 600……………………….4.91% of visitors
1440 x 900……………………..4.73% of visitors
Those are my top 5, accounting for 80% of my visitors (and true to form, the other 39 entries account for 20% of my traffic). The 800 x 600 resolution is still in the top 5, but it represents only 5% of my visitors (or about 2-5 people per day!).
The answer to this question for you is to check your own stats. You’ll probably find something similar.
